Socrates

(469 B.C. — 399 B.C.)

Socrates discovered philosophy. It was hiding in his broom-cupboard. Before his chance discovery people knew everything they needed to know. Once Socrates let the masses know about philosophy they started to be troubled by questions which, quite frankly, were probably best ignored — it was like the garden of Eden all over again.

Socrates was, of course, entirely fictional, having been made up by Plato: this makes his achievements all the more impressive.
